NP/2024/DPR/26781 The overarching aim of the project is to support EU/EEA Member States in their efforts to monitor progress toward hepatitis elimination targets related to viral hepatitis mortality. In order to do this effectively, the key objectives of the project are: To provide technical support to countries in recruiting a sample of patients with decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (this will include calculation of sample size based on expected HBV/HCV prevalence among end-stage liver diseases patients); To provide technical support to countries in their assessment of the hepatitis B and C status of these patients that will be conducted by the countries through a review of local electronic or paper medical records according to the WHO protocol; To collate the data obtained around the hepatitis B and C status of patients and using vital statistics data (e.g., from EUROSTAT or national/local data sources) conduct analyses to produce national estimates of hepatitis B and C related mortality; To produce a report and paper for peer review publication summarising the findings and outlining future options for the monitoring of mortality.
