Study on using millimetre waves (mm waves) bands for the deployment of the 5G ecosystem in the Union - SMART 2017/0015.
Bands above 24 GHz (so-called mm waves) are suitable for short-range wireless communications at very high speeds utilising a very high bandwidth. Following the planned actions in the 5GAP on making radio spectrum timely available for 5G services, the Commission should issue relevant technical harmonisation measures for spectrum bands above the 24 GHz which need to be accompanied by an impact assessment. This study will support the Commission in assessing the impacts of technical harmonisation of high-priority mm wave bands (including the 26 GHz, 32 GHz and 40 GHz bands) in support of the 5GAP. It will put particular scrutiny on incumbent services (such as satellite or fixed wireless) and their coexistence with new 5G terrestrial services in terms of aggregate socio-economic benefits and costs.
