Development of a Population Model and Adaptive Harvest Mechanism for Turtle Dove (Streptopelia Turtur)
The European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) is protected under the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC). Its hunting is allowed under national legislation in ten Member States. When authorising hunting, Member States must ensure that this is compatible with the requirements set out in Articles 2 and 7 of the Directive. A new EU/international Action Plan for the Turtle Dove (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/conservation/wildbirds/hunting/docs/20181002%20Final_draft_European%20TurtleDove.pdf) was approved in May 2018. The action plan identifies the following 3 main threats to the species:1) Habitat loss;2) Illegal killing and trapping;3) Unsustainable hunting levels. The contract aims to set up an adaptive harvest management modelling framework, for each flyway, in accordance with Action 3.2.1 of the Action Plan.
