Title
How much biodiversity does Natura 2000 cover?
Description
Whereas the EU Birds and Habitats Directives include a formal requirement for Member States to protect and manage Natura 2000 sites for a limited set of species and habitat types 'of Community interest', there is abundant circumstantial evidence that the protection requirements benefit a much wider set of species, and potentially even a substantial share of the entire species' biodiversity within the EU territory. However, there is currently no study and no data that would allow quantifying this 'umbrella effect' of Natura 2000.The aim of this study contract is, therefore, to provide quantified information in terms of share of species that is expected to significantly benefit from the protection and management requirements for Natura 2000 sites under the EU Birds and Habitats Directive. The data that this study will provide will have a number of useful practical applications.
