Decarbonisation of Shipping: Technical Study on the Future of the Ship Energy Efficiency Design Index
EEDI is one of the key short-term measures that will contribute to the achievement the objectives of the IMO GHG strategy. It is high on the agenda of the Commission as well as EU Member States — in its previous input on the issue at international level, the Commission argued for an ambitious EEDI phase 4 that should aim at reducing significantly the GHG emissions of all new ships entering the market as of around 2030. The EEDI has also important safety implications and is therefore closely linked to DG MOVE priorities. To speed up the delivery of concrete GHG emissions reduction measures, the Maritime Environment Protection Committee in its 74th session decided to advance the technical work, which requires an in-depth analysis and revision of the EEDI framework because the margins to improve energy efficiency are progressively reducing. This will require, in turn, new analytic work for most of the ships’ categories.
