Information
EASME/EMFF/2015/010.
Tagging study to determine mortality sources on cod in the Irish Sea.
The EASME wishes to enter into a service contract with the main objective to improve the knowledge regarding distribution and migration of the cod (Gadus morhua) stock in the Irish Sea (ICES Division VIIa) and its population dynamics. Tenderers are invited to provide a methodology for and subsequently implement a large-scale conventional tagging programme focused on the Irish Sea, but with good spatial coverage and connectivity with neighbouring cod stocks, in order to provide a complete picture of mortality, migration patterns and relevant information to better understand the population dynamics of this stock. It is expected that this project will run for 3 years and will support the assessment of the stock and contribute to its future management under a multiannual plan. The specific objectives of the study are the following:a) analyse cod movements and migration patterns in the Irish Sea and neighbouring areas;b) identify the extent of mixing between populations of cod in the Irish Sea and neighbouring areas specifically the Clyde area and the North Channel, and determine the southern boundary of the stock. It will be necessary to determine if mixing occurs with the west of Scotland and Celtic Sea stocks, as described by ICES;c) identify and analyse the influence of environmental or other factors and parameters in the cod movements and migration patterns;d) estimate cod growth and population structure of the stock resident in the Irish Sea;e) determine fishing mortality of the cod stock in the Irish Sea and potentially for other gadoid stocks in the area, and identify the importance of this information for the assessment of the stock;f) provide management advice regarding elements to be considered in a multiannual management plan.At the end of the contract, the contractor shall provide a description of the biology, structure and functioning of the stock of cod in the Irish Sea, identifying as far as possible key sources of mortality, stock boundaries and mixing with other stocks. The contractor is invited to provide recommendations for the management of the stock, on the basis of the objectives as described in the CFP.
