Ex-Ante publicity notice for a service contract for a study “Assessment of the potential impact of graphene, graphene oxide and other 2D materials on health, and the environment”
The European Union Observatory for Nanomaterials (EUON) aims to improve the transparency of information on the safety and markets of nanomaterials. One of the main ways to achieve this objective is by running studies to address important knowledge gaps on nanomaterials. Graphene and other 2D materials have attracted significant interest from scientists in recent years for their potential use in a wide variety of applications. The structure of graphene gives rise to unusual electronic properties and has the potential to be used in a variety of practical applications. Scientists working on graphene were awarded the 2010 Nobel prize in physics. Graphene is already known to exist on the European Union (EU) market in a number of uses. The versatility of graphene means that there is a need to compile and examine the potential health and environmental impacts of the material. The study aims to conduct a systematic literature review of the health and environmental effects of graphene, graphene oxide, and other 2D materials, based on existing public information. The objective of the requested services is to collect information from existing public sources, including journal publications, EU funded research projects, etc. The study should also assess what general conclusions can be made regarding the potential health and environmental properties of 2D materials. Finally, the review should examine to what extent existing approaches to health and environmental testing of chemicals are applicable to graphene, graphene oxide and other 2D materials, and what challenges and pitfalls exist surrounding the testing of these materials. Maximum estimated contract value 60 000 Euros.
