Information
2016-MOVE-C2-01.
Safe transport of lithium batteries by aircraft.
Lithium batteries may have been the cause, or contributed to, uncontrolled fires that led to the loss of several cargo aircraft since last decade. This has prompted EASA, FAA and ICAO to take initiatives to lift this uncertainty and to prevent further incident or accident. This study will assess the potential mitigating measures that can be used to enhance safety when transporting lithium metal and lithium ion batteries on board an aircraft (in cargo bays). Potential risks associated with the latter will be identified, the effectiveness of the different measures assessed and eventually fed to a risk assessment method that shall enable operators to establish and evaluate safe conditions for air transport.
