Study on implementing sustainable forest management according to the EU biodiversity strategy and the EU bioeconomy strategy.
Forests cover some 40 % of the EU territory. They are remarkable ecosystems and a precious natural resource. Current EU policies to grow the bioeconomy and the use of renewable energy sources are expected to drive the demand for timber and wood, implying both opportunities and new challenges. One of the likely consequences is the intensification of forest management and biomass removals, thereby transforming forest ecosystems and their distribution across the landscape. This study should help the Commission understand to what extent European-wide agreed ecological principles and guidelines for 'Sustainable forest management' (SFM) are being applied in today's 'real-life' forest planning, management and land-use operations; to identify problem areas and pre-empt threats; and finally to make out promising practices and solutions which may allow optimising forest management to accommodate new demands on forest ecosystems but to protect them and their biodiversity more effectively than to date.
